The university first evolved from Lakehead technical institute and Lakehead college of arts in September 1946.
The main purpose of establishing this university was fulfilling the need for higher education in northwestern Ontario. First-class commenced in January 1948, in a temporary rented house in downtown Port Arthur.
A few days later, in the same year, the first university courses were added to the curriculum. Following The Lakehead University Act 1965, was given royal assent on June 22, 1965, and came into force on July 1, 1965.
